Sadness

Magnesium treatment is hypothesized to be effective in treating major sadness resulting from intra-neuronal magnesium deficits. These magnesium ion neuronal deficits may be induced by stress hormones, excessive dietary calcium as well as dietary deficiencies of magnesium. Magnesium was found usually effective for treatment of sadness in general use. Related and accompanying mental illnesses in these case histories including traumatic brain injury, headache, suicidal ideation, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, postpartum sadness, cocaine, alcohol and tobacco abuse, hypersensitivity to calcium, short-term memory loss and IQ loss were also benefited.

The average mixed American diet supplies about 120 mg of magnesium per 1,000 calories. Green leafy vegetables are particularly good sources of the mineral, as are dry beans and peas, soybeans, nuts and whole grains. High losses of magnesium occur in the refinement of foods, and some losses result when cooking water is discarded. Fortifying refined grain and drinking water with biologically available magnesium to pre-twentieth century levels is recommended. Exercise produces chemical and psychological changes, provides recreation and mental relaxation besides mental and physical fitness and reduces feeling of helplessness. Meditation helps the mind to concentrate and creates balance in the nervous system. Regular time, place and practices are important.

Magnesium is a mineral that serves a vital role in the human body. Magnesium is found in both plants and animals. Magnesium is recognized in homeopathic medicine for the treatment of sadness. For example, magnesium chloride (Magnesia Muriatica) has been used for many decades to relieve various emotional problems including anxiety, apathy, aversions, despair, sadness, discontent, headaches, insecurity, irritability, over sensitiveness, restlessness, sulkiness, talkativeness and uncertainty. With the increased consumption of refined and/or processed foods, dietary magnesium intake in the United States appears to have decreased over the years (Marier, 1986). Total magnesium intake is usually dependent on caloric intake, which explains the higher intake levels seen in the young and in adult males and the lower levels seen in women and in the elderly.
